GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Thiel College baseball team split a doubleheader against Grove City, losing the first game, a Presidents' Athletic Conference game, 10-8, and winning the second game, a non-conference game, 7-6.
In game one, the Tomcats and Wolverines alternated scoring innings until the fifth inning when the Tomcats took a 3-2 lead. The Wolverines took the lead and ran with it the next three innings, scoring multiple runs in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings to take a 10-3 lead. The Tomcats began to claw back with a five-run ninth inning, but it was not enough as the Wolverines won 10-8.
Trey Williams (Jeromesville, Ohio/Hillsdale),
Anthony Sebastian (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk), and
Chase Morrison (Monaca, Pa./Central Valley) had multi-hit games in game one, going a combined 8-for13 with two doubles, two runs, and five RBIs.
Trey Williams (Jeromesville, Ohio/Hillsdale) started the game and allowed just two runs (one earned) with five strikeouts in the no-decision.
Sante Carducci (Toronto, Ohio/Toronto) was charged with the loss.
For the Wolverines, Anthony Tambellini went 3-for-5 with three runs. PAC Hitter of the Week Bobby Abbott stayed hot, reaching base five times with two hits and three walks. Elijah White earned the win in relief and Noah Sedmak earned a save.
In game two, the Wolverines had a 4-2 lead entering the sixth inning and looked to be on their way to a series sweep. However, the Tomcats scored three runs in the sixth inning and the Wolverines scored one to bring the score to a 5-5 tie. In the top of the seventh, Morrison hit the go-ahead two-RBI single to take a 7-5 lead into the bottom of the final frame. The Wolverines struck back with a run and had the bases loaded with just one out, down 7-6.
Jamin Wentling (Greenville, Pa./Greenville) struck out the final two batters of the game to slam the door and earn the save.
For the Tomcats, Williams notched another double with a run and an RBI.
Nash Matson (Kittanning, Pa./Armstrong) went 1-for-2 with two walks and stole his seventh base of the season.
Alex Lutz (Loveland, Ohio/Milford) earned the win in relief, tossing three innings and allowing just one unearned run on two hits.
For the Wolverines, Tanner Orner had three hits and two RBIs. C.J. Saylor reached base four times, going 1-for-1 with three walks and two runs. Jacob Brothers was charged with the loss out of the bullpen.
The Tomcats' next series will be against the Saint Vincent Bearcats, with Thiel hosting a doubleheader on Saturday and Saint Vincent hosting a doubleheader on Sunday. The first games both days are scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
