Tomcats drop both to Wolverines in doubleheader

GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College baseball team lost to the Grove City Wolverines in both games of a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader, 6-2 and 9-6 in game one and game two, respectively.
 
In game one, the Wolverines kept the Tomcats' bats at bay, while getting most of their scoring late with a three-run fifth inning and two-run seventh inning.
 
For the Tomcats, Nash Matson (Kittanning, Pa./Armstrong) was 2-for-3 with a double and run. Seth Johnson (Magnolia, Ohio/Tuscarawas Valley) and Jamin Wentling (Greenville, Pa./Greenville) also reached base twice with a hit and a walk each. Wentling's hit was a double and scored a run as well. Alec Katon (Ashtabula, Ohio/Edgewood) was charged with a loss, allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits and six walks while striking out three.
 
For the Wolverines, Tate Ostrowski earned the win in a complete game. He allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits and two walks with six strikeouts. Bobby Abbott went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs.
 
In game two, the Wolverines jumped to a 3-0 lead after the first inning. The Tomcats answered with a five-run fifth inning. The lead would not last long as the Wolverines tied the game 5-5 in the fourth inning. In the seventh inning, the Wolverines added two runs and the Tomcats scored one to bring the score to 7-6. The Wolverines added two more insurance runs in the ninth inning to win 9-6.
 
For the Tomcats, Anthony Sebastian (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk) was a perfect 3-for-3 with a walk, double, two runs and an RBI. Derek Knapp (Warren, Pa./Warren) led the Tomcats with 3 RBIs. Andrew Giesey (Penn, Pa./Penn Trafford) reached base four times with a double, two walks, and a hit-by-pitch. Matson and Johnson each had two hits in game two. Matson also notched a stolen base, his sixth of the season. Travis Harvey (Boardman, Ohio/Boardman) was charged with a loss, allowing four runs on five hits and a walk with three strikeouts. Will Brandsema (Orlando, Fla./Cypress Creek) pitched a clean inning in relief after taking over in the ninth, allowing no baserunners and striking out one.
 
For the Wolverines, Abbott had three more hits and three more RBIs. C.J. Saylor went 2-for-4 with three runs. Five different Wolverines notched a double in game two. Nick Guidas earned the win in relief, pitching 3.2 innings, allowing one run on five hits and a walk with six strikeouts.
 
The Tomcats will look to avoid a sweep against the Wolverines when they face in Grove City for a doubleheader on Monday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
