PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Thiel College baseball team won both games of a doubleheader against the Chatham Cougars, 5-0 and 5-4 (nine innings) on Sunday. The first game was a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) contest, while the second game was a non-conference game.
In game one, the Tomcats scored three runs in the second inning and two runs in the sixth inning. This would be all they needed as
Travis Harvey (Boardman, Ohio/Boardman) pitched a one-hit shutout. In game two, the Tomcats and Cougars battled in a close game. Entering the top of the seventh, the Tomcats were down 4-3 until
Seth Johnson (Magnolia, Ohio/Tuscarawas Valley) scored the game-tying run on a passed ball to send the game into extra innings. In the top of the ninth,
Chase Morrison (Monaca, Pa./Central Valley) drove home Johnson on an RBI triple for the game-winning run.
For the Tomcats in game one, Harvey allowed just one hit in nine shutout innings and struck out seven in the win. He gave up the lone hit, an infield single, with two outs in the second inning and held the Cougars hitless for the remaining 7.1 innings. Five Tomcats had two hits, including Morrison,
Nash Matson (Kittanning, Pa./Armstrong),
Trey Williams (Jeromesville, Ohio/Hillsdale),
Anthony Rago (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin), and
Derek Knapp (Warren, Pa./Warren). One of Matson's hits was an RBI double.
In game two, Morrison went 3-for-4 with a walk and two RBIs, including the game-winning RBI triple.
Alec Gamble (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) also notched three hits, a run, and an RBI. Johnson had two hits and scored both the game-tying and game-winning runs. Williams went 2-for-3 at the plate with a run and a walk, while also earning the win in relief. Williams pitched three shutout innings with four strikeouts and just one hit allowed.
Sante Carducci (Toronto, Ohio/Toronto) pitched five innings and allowed three runs (two earned) in the start.
For the Cougars, Justin Marshall got the only hit in game one, a single. Dominic Costellic was charged with the loss in 5.2 innings pitched. In game two, Marshall went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Erik Napolitano was charged with the loss in three innings in relief.
The Tomcats' next series will be against the Washington & Jefferson Presidents, with the Presidents hosting a doubleheader on Saturday and the Tomcats hosting the doubleheader on Sunday. Both doubleheaders are currently scheduled for 1 p.m. start time.
