Tomcats split doubleheader against Cougars on senior day

GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College baseball team split a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader against Chatham on Saturday. The Tomcats took game on in a 6-0 shutout, while the Cougars won game two, 7-5.

Before the first game, the team recognized their 2021 seniors and some of the 2020 graduates.

In game one, The Tomcats kept the Cougars' bats at bay and scored four runs in the third inning on their way to a 6-0 victory. In game two, Chatham started strong with three runs in the first and fourth innings. The Tomcats clawed back, but the six-run deficit proved too much to overcome as the Cougars held on to win 7-5.

In game one, Alec Katon (Ashtabula, Ohio/Edgewood) spun six strong innings in the win, allowing no runs on four hits and four walks while striking out six. Sante Carducci (Toronto, Ohio/Toronto) pitched the final inning to complete the combined shutout. Jamin Wentling (Greenville, Pa./Greenville) finished the game with two hits, including a triple, two runs, and an RBI. Nash Matson (Kittanning, Pa./Armstrong) also hit a triple, scored two runs, and notched his team-leading ninth stolen base of the season. Trey Williams (Jeromesville, Ohio/Hillsdale) went 2-for-3 with two doubles, a run, and an RBI.

In game two, the Tomcats scored all their runs on a pair of two-run home runs by Wentling and Chase Morrison (Monaca, Pa./Central Valley) and a solo home run by Seth Johnson (Magnolia, Ohio/Tuscarawas Valley). This was Wentling's team-leading fifth home run of the season and fourth in the past seven games. Morrison's home run was the first of his collegiate career. Williams tallied two more hits, including his third double on the day, and a run. Richard Crooks (Milan, Ohio/Edison) was charged with the loss in 3.1 innings pitched. Will Brandsema (Orlando, Fla./Cypress Creek) allowed just one run in 4.2 innings in relief and Derek Knapp (Warren, Pa./Warren) threw a scoreless ninth inning.

For the Cougars in game one, Jonathan Scarsella recorded two of their four hits. Ryan Shawley was charged with the loss in five innings. In game two, Nico Cuello went 4-for-4 with a triple, two RBIs, and a run. Scarsella stole four bases and scored two runs. Brandon Griener hit a solo home run. Austin Andonisio got the win, pitching 6.2 innings of four-run ball.

The Tomcats and Cougars will finish the series tomorrow at Chatham, with the doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
