GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College baseball team won both games against the Waynesburg Yellow Jackets on Sunday. The Tomcats won the first game, a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) game, 5-1, and the second game, a non-conference game, 6-1.
In game one, the Tomcats jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning. Then the Tomcats' pitching took over, allowing just six hits in the game, with the only run coming in the ninth inning for a 5-1 final.
In game two it was more of the same, with the Tomcats leading 3-0 after the second inning. Tomcats' pitching again held the Yellow Jackets' bats at bay and won the game 6-1.
The Tomcats got strong outings from starting pitchers
Travis Harvey (Boardman, Ohio/Boardman) and
Will Brandsema (Orlando, Fla./Cypress Creek), both credited with wins. Harvey tossed eight innings in game one, allowing just six hits and one unearned run with three strikeouts. Brandsema spun five innings in game two with one unearned run allowed on just five hits.
For Tomcat hitters in game one,
Chase Morrison (Monaca, Pa./Central Valley) notched three hits and a run.
Anthony Rago (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run.
Alec Gamble (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) scored two runs in the contest. In game two,
Derek Knapp (Warren, Pa./Warren) reached base in all three plate appearances, with two hits and a walk. Knapp also drove in three runs and scored a run.
Nick Guarnieri (Niles, Ohio/Mckinley) and
Matt Hartzell (Front Royal, Va./Skyline) each went 2-for-3 with two runs. Guarnieri also recorded a double and an RBI.
For the Yellow Jackets, John Przybylinski totaled three hits combined in the two games with a run. Brandon Durbin went 2-for-5 on the day with an RBI. Joe Sabolek was charged with the loss in game one and Justin Clevenger took the loss in game two.
The Tomcats' will look to keep momentum going as they take on the Chatham Cougars in a doubleheader at home on Saturday. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 1 p.m.
