Tomcats plate 17 in game two, split doubleheader versus Yellow Jackets

WAYNESBURG, Pa. – The Thiel College baseball team split a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader against the Waynesburg Yellow Jackets on Saturday. The Yellow Jackets won game one, 6-5, and the Tomcats won game two, 17-1.
 
In game one, Waynesburg struck first in the bottom of the first. Most of the Tomcats' run production came from a four-run third inning. The Tomcats held a 4-1 lead until the Yellow Jackets tied the game in the bottom of the fifth. In the bottom of the sixth, the Yellow Jackets took a 6-4 lead and held on in the top of the seventh to win 6-5.
 
The Tomcats were led by a three-run home run by Seth Johnson (Magnolia, Ohio/Tuscarawas Valley) and a solo home run by Alec Gamble (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour), both of which were their first career home runs as Tomcats. Nash Matson (Kittanning, Pa./Armstrong) also reached base three times with a hit, two walks, a run and an RBI. Chase Morrison (Monaca, Pa./Central Valley) went 1-for-2 with a double, a walk, and two runs. Derek Knapp (Warren, Pa./Warren) was charged with the loss in relief.
 
In game two, the Tomcats' bats exploded for 17 runs. The Tomcats scored in each inning from the second inning to the sixth inning, capped off by a five-run sixth inning. The Tomcats also scored seven runs in the eighth inning. Tomcats' pitching also only allowed one run to bring the final score to 17-1. Twelve different Tomcats recorded a(n) run and/or RBI.
 
The Tomcats totaled 10 extra-base hits in game two. Jamin Wentling (Greenville, Pa./Greenville) hit two home runs, giving him four on the season. Wentling also led the game with five RBIs, a new career high. Richard Crooks (Milan, Ohio/Edison) was the winning pitcher for the Tomcats, tossing seven innings of one-run ball and allowing just one walk. Johnson reached base four times for the Tomcats, going 2-for-3 with a triple, two runs, and two walks. Anthony Sebastian (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk) notched three hits with a double, two runs, and three RBIs. Matson led the Tomcats with three runs. Gamble added two doubles, two runs, and an RBI.
 
The Yellow Jackets were led by Tyler Woodrow's go-ahead two-run single in the sixth inning of game one. Corey Fischer earned the win, allowing one run on three hits in 3.2 innings in relief in game one. Tyler Srbinovich struck out the only batter he faced to get the save and strand the tying run on third. Ryan Sullivan was charged with the loss in game two.
 
The Tomcats and Yellow Jackets face in a doubleheader again tomorrow at Thiel, starting at 2 p.m.
