Tomcats drop opener, lead game two against Golden Tornadoes

GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel Tomcats' baseball team opened its season with a doubleheader against the Geneva Golden Tornadoes. Geneva won the first game 10-8, while Thiel leads the second game 12-3. Game two was suspended due to darkness after the seventh inning.

In the first game, the Golden Tornadoes started strong with a five run first inning. Tomcats starter Sante Carducci (Toronto, Ohio/Toronto) settled in after that inning, pitching four straight scoreless innings. Thiel answered, scoring three runs in the first, four in the fourth, and one in the fifth inning to take an 8-5 lead entering the sixth inning. The Golden Tornadoes struck back on back-to-back home runs in the sixth inning to tie the game at eight, then took the lead in the top of the seventh and held on to win 10-8.

In game two, the Tomcats started off hot, with back-to-back home runs by Jamin Wentling (Greenville, Pa./Greenville) and Trey Williams (Jeromesville, Ohio/Hillsdale). Thiel tallied five runs in both the first and second innings, batting around in both innings to take a sizeable lead. The game was suspended with Thiel leading 12-3 after seven innings and will be completed Saturday at Geneva.

Alec Gamble (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) recorded three hits for the Tomcats in the first game, including one run and one RBI. Trey Williams (Jeromesville, Ohio/Hillsdale) reached base three times in his first game as a Tomcat, recording two hits and a walk. Nash Matson (Kittanning, Pa./Armstrong) recorded a double for Thiel in the first game and notched one run and one RBI. Carducci started for the Tomcats and threw 5.1 innings with four earned runs and six strikeouts. Travis Harvey (Boardman, Ohio/Boardman) was charged with a loss in game one.

For the Golden Tornadoes, Garrison Wieland hit two home runs in game one with three RBIs and two runs. Abram King hit a two-run home run for Geneva. Joshua Kearns earned the win in relief, pitching 3.1 innings, giving up one run and striking out three batters.

Today's game two will be resumed before Thiel takes on Geneva in a doubleheader at Geneva on Saturday. First pitch for the first game of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m.
