Tomcats win suspended game, lose following game in extras

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Thiel Tomcats won the suspended game from Wednesday, 12-6, and lost the first game of the originally scheduled doubleheader in 12 innings, 11-10, against the Geneva Golden Tornadoes in two Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) bouts. The second game in the doubleheader was incomplete due to darkness.

In the makeup game from Wednesday, the Tomcats led 12-3 entering the eighth inning. On Wednesday, the Tomcats scored five runs in the first inning, five runs in the second inning, and one run in the third inning to take a quick 11-0 lead. The Golden Tornadoes scraped across more runs on Wednesday and Saturday to bring the final score to 12-6.

Jamin Wentling (Greenville, Pa./Greenville) finished the game with a home run, single, and walk, including two runs and two RBIs.  Trey Wiliams also hit a home run and notched two walks, two runs, and two RBIs. Nash Matson (Kittanning, Pa./Armstrong) led the team with three runs.  Anthony Sebastian (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk) and Anthony Rago (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) were both a perfect 3-3. Richard Crooks (Milan, Ohio/Edison) was the winning pitcher for the Tomcats, firing six innings, giving up two runs (one earned) and striking out seven.

For the Golden Tornadoes, Garrison Wieland hit a solo home run. Abram King notched two RBIs. Dylan O'Rourke was charged with the loss as the Tomcats scored 10 runs off of him on Wednesday.

In game two, both teams came out of the gate swinging, with the Tomcats scoring three runs in the first and the Golden Tornadoes scoring six runs. In the third inning, the Tomcats added two more runs to cut the Golden Tornadoes' lead to 6-5. Thiel took the lead with a three-run fifth inning and tacked on another run in the sixth to take a 9-6 lead going into the bottom of the sixth. Thiel and Geneva each added a run to bring the game to 10-7 heading into the bottom of the ninth. Geneva scored three runs with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to send the game into extra innings. In extras, the Tomcats were held scoreless, and the Golden Tornadoes won on a walk-off error.

Andrew Giesey (Penn, Pa./Penn Trafford) led the Tomcats with two extra base hits (one home run and one double), two runs, and two RBIs. Alec Gamble (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) finished with two hits, including a double, two runs, and one RBI. Seth Johnson (Magnolia, Ohio/Tuscarawas Valley) notched two hits, including a triple, two RBIs, and a run. Travis Harvey (Boardman, Ohio/Boardman) pitched 4.2 innings in relief, allowing just one run and striking out two. Derek Knapp (Warren, Pa./Warren) was charged with the loss, allowing one unearned run and striking out two.

The Golden Tornadoes were led by three hit efforts from Alex McKay and Alex Fee. McKay also totaled two runs and one RBI. Dylan O'Rourke notched the win in game two, pitching 6.1 innings while giving up two hits, one unearned run, and three strikeouts.

The Tomcats' next series will be against the Westminster Titans, with a doubleheader next Saturday at Westminster and a doubleheader next Sunday at Thiel. Both doubleheaders are scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
