GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College men's basketball team was defeated, 66-68, by the Westminster Titans in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) game Saturday afternoon.
The first half was back-and-forth, but the Titans held a slight lead for most of the half and led the Tomcats 40-36 heading into the break. The Tomcats started the second half with a 9-0 run to take a 45-40 lead, the team's largest lead of the game. The Titans regained the lead, but the Tomcats stayed close, trailing by just three heading into the final minute.
As time was winding down, back-to-back layups by
Ahmad Tejumola (Waldorf, Md./Saint Charles) gave the Tomcats a 65-64 lead. The Titans scored a layup of their own to take a 66-65 lead with 16 seconds left. With nine seconds left,
Marlon Ellerbee (Temple Hills, Md./Oxon Hill) drew a foul and hit a free throw to tie the game at 66. Anthony Ritter hit the winning shot, a two-point jumper, with less than a second left as the Tomcats fell 66-68.
Tejumola led the Tomcats with 22 points and 10 rebounds, his fifth double-double of the season.
Daquan Simmons (Capitol Heights, Md./Central) tallied 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting, including 3-for-6 shooting from beyond the arc. Ellerbee notched a career-high and led the Tomcats with seven assists, while also adding seven rebounds and five points.
For the Titans, Daniel Ritter, Andrew Clark, Tyler James, and Josh Hutcherson all recorded double-digit points. James added nine rebounds, three blocks, and a steal.
The Tomcats' next game will be on the road at Washington and Jefferson Tuesday, January 4
th at 8 p.m.
