GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel Tomcats lost a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) game Saturday to the Case Western Reserve Spartans at Alumni Stadium, 30-12.
Scoreless after a quarter of play, the Spartans took control with 17 points in the second quarter. Donny Genetin scored Case Western's first touchdown on an 8-yard pass from Drew Saxton to cap off a 9-play drive that covered 54 yards in 5:07.
Antonio Orsini made it 14-0 with 2:21 remaining before halftime when he scored on a 7-yard run to finish off a 13-play, 83-yard drive that consumed a little more than six minutes. Jacob Lurie made a 27-yard field goal as time expired in the first half to give the Spartans a 17-0 lead.
Case Western Reserve went up 24-0 with 11:20 remaining in the third quarter when Saxton threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Lucas DeCaro. Jack McCrae recorded the final points for the Spartans early in the fourth quarter when he scored on a 5-yard run.
The Tomcats cut into the lead late in the fourth quarter.
Owen Trumbull (Bear Lake, Pa./Eisenhower) scored on a 1-yard run with 4:13 remaining to finish off an 11-play, 64-yard drive.
Donnovan Blue (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn Hills) recorded Thiel's final points when he caught a 43-yard Hail Mary pass from Trumbull as time expired.
Trumbull completed 15-of-20 passes for 199 yards. He threw one touchdown pass and one interception. Tight end
Marlon Brown (White Plains, Md./St. Charles) caught two passes for 57 yards while
DeAnthony Pendleton (Spotsylvania, Va./Spotsylvania) recorded three catches for 25 yards. Blue's 43-yard touchdown reception was the longest completion on the day.
Pendleton also ran for 36 yards on eight carries. Trumbull ran 13 times for 21 yards.
Saxton completed 24-of-33 passes for 272 yards with a pair of touchdown tosses. Noah Coyne led the Spartans with six receptions for 97 yards while Genetin recorded seven catches for 84 yards.
Orsini led Case on the ground with 11 carries for 57 yards with a score. Donald Day III ran eight times for 51 yards.
Cornerback
Justin Logan (North Chesterfield, Va./James River) led the Tomcats on defense with 10 tackles. Linebacker
Joe Stoutamire (Clairton, Pa./Clairton) recorded eight tackles, two of which were behind the line of scrimmage. Stoutamire, one of three Tomcats to record a sack, also broke up a pass.
Ryan Cabrera led Case Western with 10 tackles, 2.5 of which were for a loss of yards. Cabrera also recorded a sack.
The Tomcats will face the Geneva Golden Tornadoes on the road next Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
