Tomcats hold off Presidents

GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College wrestling team earned a 24-23 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) victory over the Washington & Jefferson Presidents on Thursday.

Jake Alberts (Ellwood City/Lincoln ) and Jason Baker (New Alexandria, Pa. /Derry Area) got the Tomcats on the board early winning the first two bouts of the night. Alberts defeated AD Nelson by tech fall in 3:52 at 133 and Baker pinned Vincent Catania in 2:12 at 141 to give Thiel an 11-0 lead heading into 149.

The Presidents got one back as Michael Heinl defeated Hunter Martz (Hawthorn, Pa./Redbank Valley) by major decision at 149.

Austin Bonacci (West Mifflin, Pa./West Mifflin) increased Thiel's lead when he defeated W & J's Lawrence Schrott by major decision giving the Tomcats a 15-4 advantage going into 165.

At 165, freshman Peyton Hearn (Conneaut, Pa./Conneaut Area) won his first match in a Tomcat singlet when he pinned Raheem Clemons in 20 seconds. This gave Thiel a 17-point advantage before the 174-bout.

The Presidents won the next three matches by decision, major decision and pin trimming Thiel's lead to four before the heavyweight bout.

Senior Gage Gladysz (Greenville, Pa./Greenville) made his home debut in the heavyweight division and secured the win for the Tomcats when he defeated Jake Walker by decision.

Thiel will be back in action on Friday when they face Penn State Behrend on the road. The match is scheduled for 7 p.m.
