WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Thiel College softball team lost a pair of Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) games on the road Saturday to the Washington & Jefferson Presidents. Thiel lost the first game 6-4 and the second game 11-7.
Thiel led 4-1 after five innings in the first game.
Quinn Ursprung (Bel Air, Md./C Milton Wright) drove in Thiel's first run in the second inning on a single up the middle.
Jessica Kelley (Freeport, Pa./Freeport) hit an RBI-double in the third, and
Bailey Hoover (Smock, Pa./Uniontown) followed with a run-scoring fielder's choice. Kelley notched her second RBI of the game in the fourth.
W&J scored five runs in the sixth, four of which came on Brooke Lapia's grand slam.
Kelley went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a double in the first game.
Miranda Reesman (Vandergrift, Pa./Leechburg) and Ursprung also tallied a pair of hits.
Kelley took the loss in the first game. She allowed four earned runs on six hits with six strikeouts.
The Tomcats built up a 5-0 lead in the second game. Reesman drove in a run on a double down the left field line in the first. In the second, Kelley's single, coupled with an error, led to four Thiel runs.
The Presidents scored three runs in the bottom of the second, but
Madison Fullmer (Elyria, Ohio/Elyria) drove in Thiel's sixth run of the game in the top of the third on a single up the middle.
The Presidents went on to score eight runs in innings four through six and held on for their second win of the day.
Vanessa Falce (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) and Ursprung both recorded three hits in the second game. Kelley notched two hits and drove in a pair of runs.
Fullmer, who pitched the first four innings, took the loss. Reliever
Ashtin Kirkwood (Elderton, Pa./West Shamokin) allowed one run on two hits in two innings of work.
The Tomcats will take on the Penn State Behrend Lions on Sunday. The first game of the non-conference doubleheader will begin at 1 p.m.
