GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to Thomas More University (5-1 and 6-4) at Tomcat Park on Saturday.
The Saints jumped out to a 1-0 advantage in the first and went on to add a run in the second to make it 2-0 in favor of Thomas More after two.
Both the Tomcats and Saints went scoreless after the the second until the Thomas More added three runs in the seventh to build their lead to 5-0.
The Tomcats tried to mount a comeback in the seventh as
Anthony Sebastian (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk) hit a sacrifice fly to score
Joe Mott (Kinsman, Ohio/Badger) to put Thiel on the board, 5-1. However, the Tomcats could not overcome the early deficit and dropped the seven-inning contest, 5-1.
Thomas More's Jordan Houze pitched a complete game to earn the win.
Game two saw the Saints get out to another early lead as they led 2-0 after three innings before the Tomcats answered with a three-run sixth.
In the sixth,
Jamin Wentling (Greenville, Pa./Greenville) doubled to score the first run, while
Nash Matson (Kittanning, Pa./Armstrong) singled up the middle to score Wentling.
Anthony Rago (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) singled through the right side to give the Tomcats their first lead of the day, 3-2.
The Saints took advantage of a bases loaded jam in the eighth to tie the game 3-3. Thomas More struck again in the ninth as they built a three-run lead, 6-3 headed to the bottom of the inning.
Mott singled to left to put a runner on before
Nick Fowkes (New Eagle, Pa./Ringgold) singled to score
Adam Simon (McClellandtown, Pa./Albert Galatin), who pinch ran for Mott to make it 6-4.
Thiel was unable to close the gap as they dropped game two by a final score of 6-4.
With the pair of losses, Thiel falls to 16-20 overall.
The Tomcats return to action on Friday as they begin a three-game set with Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) opponent Waynesburg University. Game one will be at Tomcat Park on Friday, first pitch is set for 4 p.m.
