Tomcats secure spot in PAC Championship Tournament

Thiel sweeps Geneva in regular season finale

GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel Tomcats secured a berth in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Softball Championship Tournament Wednesday after they earned a pair of wins over the Geneva Golden Tornadoes in their regular season finale at Tomcat Park.

Thiel defeated Geneva 7-5 in the first game of Wednesday's twinbill and 2-0 in the second game.

Geneva opened the first game with a pair of runs in the first inning, but Vanessa Falce (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) cut the lead in half in the bottom half of the inning when she hit an RBI-double to center field, allowing Leah Woytek (Hillsville, Pa./Mohawk) to score.

Thiel scored four runs in the fourth to take a 5-2 lead. Falce drove in a pair of runs on an infield single while Woytek hit an RBI-single up the middle.

The Golden Tornadoes scored a run in the third to cut the lead down to 5-3, but Thiel came back with a run in the fourth and another run in the sixth. Miranda Reesman (Vandergrift, Pa./Leechburg) picked up the RBI in the fourth on a double to center field. Falce hit her second double of the game in the sixth to give Thiel a 7-3 lead.

Geneva scored a pair of unearned runs in the seventh but the Tomcats held on to win, 7-5.

Jessica Kelley (Freeport, Pa./Freeport) earned the win. She allowed three earned runs on six hits with five strikeouts.

Falce led the Tomcats at the plate with a 3-for-4 performance that included four RBIs and a pair of doubles. Woytek, Kelley and Quinn Ursprung (Bel Air, Md./C Milton Wright) each collected two hits.

As she did in the first game, Falce sparked the Tomcats in the second game when she drove in a run in the first inning on a double to left field, which scored Kelley.

The game was scoreless over the next four innings. Ursprung gave the Tomcats an insurance run in the sixth on an infield hit, which allowed Falce to score.

Both teams were limited to four hits in the second game. Falce led the Tomcats at the dish with a pair of doubles and one RBI.

Kelley earned her second win of the day and her 10th of the season in the second game. She followed up her performance in the first game with a complete game shutout in the second game. She allowed four hits in the second game with one strikeout.

The PAC Softball Championship Tournament will be hosted at the highest seed on Friday-Saturday, May 3-4. Should Geneva qualify for the tournament, play will begin one day earlier, Thursday, May 2. Details for the four-team, double-elimination championship tournament will be released by early next week.
