Tomcats sweep Wolverines

GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Thiel College softball team won a pair of Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) games on the road Wednesday over the Grove City Wolverines. Thiel won the first game 13-10 and the second game 5-4.

Thiel held a 6-5 lead after three innings in the first game. The Tomcats increased their lead to 10-5 after plating four runs in the fourth, two of which were on RBI-singles by Jessica Kelley (Freeport, Pa./Freeport) and Vanessa Falce (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport).

The Wolverines closed the gap with three runs in the sixth, but Thiel responded with three more runs in the top of the seventh to hold on for the conference win. In the seventh, Kelley hit an RBI-single while Falce smashed a 2-RBI double to center field.

Kelley and Leah Woytek (Hillsville, Pa./Mohawk) both went 5-for-5 in the first game. Kelley drove in three runs. Falce, who went 3-for-5 at the dish, doubled and drove in three runs.

Kelley earned the win. She allowed nine earned runs on 14 hits.

Allyssa Kidwell (Fort Mohave, Ariz./Mohave Accelerated) gave the Tomcats a 1-0 lead in the second inning of the second game on a single. Grove City got that run back in the bottom of the second, but Woytek and Kelley both recorded RBI-singles in the third to give the Tomcats a 3-1 edge.

Falce increased Thiel's lead to 5-1 in the top of the fourth on a 2-RBI single to center field. Grove City came back with two runs in the bottom of the fourth and refused to give up another run the rest of the way.

In the seventh, Grove City cut Thiel's lead down to a single run on a 2-out sacrifice fly. However, Madison Fullmer (Elyria, Ohio/Elyria) preserved the win by getting the next batter to fly out to right field.

Fullmer earned the win. She allowed three earned runs on 11 hits.

Woytek and Kelley both went 3-for-4 with an RBI in the second game. Falce went 2-for-4 with two RBIs while Miranda Reesman (Vandergrift, Pa./Leechburg) doubled.

Thiel will host the Waynesburg Yellow Jackets Saturday at Tomcat Park. The first game of the PAC twinbill is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
