FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Thiel College baseball team continued play at the 2019 Gene Cusic Classic on Friday as they were defeated 8-3 by Augustana College.
Tomcat starter
Sante Carducci (Toronto, Ohio/Toronto) took a no hit bid into the fifth before giving up a pair of hits in the inning. After five, Thiel trailed 2-0. Carducci would go six innings, while allowing just two runs.
Thiel got on the board in the sixth as
Joe Mott (Kinsman, Ohio/Badger) drove in
Nick Fowkes (New Eagle, Pa./Ringgold) to cut the Vikings lead in half, 2-1.
Augustana answered in the seventh with three runs to extended the lead to 5-1, an RBI from
Griffin Curry (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell) in the bottom of the inning pulled Thiel within three, 5-2.
Augustana piled on three late runs in the eighth to take 8-2 lead before Mott collected his second RBI of the game as he would drive in Fowkes for the second time today. Thiel trailed 8-3 headed into their final at bat.
In the ninth,
Jamin Wentling (Greenville, Pa./Greenville) got on base with a one-out single but the Tomcats were unable to make up the five-run deficit and fell 8-3.
With the result, Thiel falls to 2-4 on the year and will be back in action on Saturday as they face Rockford University at Noon on Terry Park Field #2.
