Thiel storms back to defeat Alvernia, 9-7

FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Thiel College baseball team defeated Alvernia University 9-7 on Tuesday to improve to 2-1 on the year. 

Thiel raced out to a 1-0 lead in the second as Joe Mott (Kinsman, Ohio/Badger) singled to right field to score Anthony Sebastian (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk). The Tomcats followed that up with another run in the third as Andrew Giesey's (Penn, Pa./Penn Trafford) sacrifice fly to center scored Nash Matson (Kittanning, Pa./Armstrong) to make it 2-0 Thiel after two.

Alvernia answered in consecutive innings (fourth, fifth, and sixth) scoring a run in each to take their first lead of the game at 3-2 heading into the bottom of the sixth.

Tomcat starter Griffin Curry (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell) went six innings, the longest outing of any Thiel starter this season. Curry only allowed two earned runs on four hits, while collecting three strikeouts. 

Daniel Patrice (Munich, Germany/EST) would double to center to score Sebastian in the sixth to even the game at 3-3 headed to the seventh. 

In the seventh, the Golden Wolves struck again scoring three in the inning two of which came on a double from Nathan Sides to make it 6-3 in favor of Alvernia.

Thiel stormed back in the bottom of the inning scoring six runs to take a 9-6 lead. In the inning, Thiel collected six hits. 

Thiel relievers Myles Metz (Chardon, Ohio/Chardon) and Dante Vaniel (White Oak, Pa./McKeesport) kept the lead as they handed the game to Thiel closer Tanner Teconchuk (North Warren, Pa./Warren) in the ninth. 

Teconchuk allowed just one run and closed the game for his first save of the year. Metz (2-0) would collect his second win of the season. 

Seven Tomcats had multi-hit games as Mott had a game-high three hits on the day.

Thiel picked up the win after falling to Alvernia 6-1 yesterday. 

With the win, Thiel improves to 2-1 on the year and will be back in action on Wednesday as they face St. John's University (MN) at the Player Development Complex, Field #3 in Fort Myers, Fla., first pitch is set for Noon.
