Thiel and St. John's clash ends in extras

FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Thiel College baseball team fell in extra innings 10-7 to St. John's University (MN) as St. John's Joey Stock blasted a three-run shot in the bottom of the 10th to give the Johnnies a walk-off nonconference win.

Thiel led 1-0 to start the game before St. John's answered wth four runs in the bottom of the inning.

Tomcat starter Will Brandsema (Orlando, Fla./Cypress Creek) settled in after a four-run first and went on to pitch six innings and did not allow another run after the first, while collecting four strikeouts.

Thiel cut the lead in the third as Daniel Patrice (Munich, Germany/EST) and Griffin Curry (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell) each drove in a run apiece to make it 4-3 after three.

The two squads were shutout from the third until the eighth as the Tomcats struck again as Christian Aldrich (Cranberry Township, Pa./Central Catholic) doubled to left to score Anthony Sebastian (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk) to tie the game at 4-4. Andrew Giesey (Penn, Pa./Penn Trafford) earned a sacrifice-fly to give Thiel their first lead of the game since the first to make it 5-4. A bases loaded walk drawn by Curry later in the eighth increased Thiel's lead to 6-4.

Nick Fowkes (New Eagle, Pa./Ringgold) collected an insurance run in the ninth on his team leading third homerun of the year to make it 7-4 before St. John's last chance up.

In the bottom of the ninth, the bases were quickly loaded with Johnnies as St. John's struck for three runs in the innings to force extras.

Thiel went down in order in the top of the 10th to give St. John's a chance to end the game in the bottom of the inning as the game remained tied at 7-7.

With two outs and two men on, SJU's Stock blasted a pinch-hit walk off homerun to left field to drop Thiel to 2-2 on the year.

The Tomcats are back in action on Thursday as they face Bluffton University to continue play at the 2019 Gene Cusic Classic, first pitch is set for 9 a.m. at the Player Development Complex, Field #3 in Fort Myers, Fla.
