FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Thiel College baseball team picked up their first loss of the season on Monday as they fell 6-1 to the Alvernia University Golden Wolves in the second day of play in the 2019 Gene Cusic Classic.
Thiel and Alvernia traded runs in the first as
Nick Fowkes (New Eagle, Pa./Ringgold) grounded out to first to score Nash Maston in the top of the inning, followed by Alvernia answering with a two out RBI single to even the game at 1-1 after one.
Tomcat starter
Sante Carducci (Toronto, Ohio/Toronto) settled in after the first as he would go on to toss five innings allowing only two runs and five hits, while collecting four strikeouts.
Thiel's bats were quiet after the first as the Tomcats would go on to only collect five hits after yesterday's 26 run offensive outburst against Rivier.
Alvernia scored on a sacrifice fly in the fourth to take their first lead of the game, 2-1. The Golden Wolves answered again in the seventh with a grand slam to build the lead to 6-1.
Alvernia starter Jake Reese picked up the win as he allowed just one run in six innings of work. Carducci (0-1) was saddled with the loss.
Christian Aldrich (Cranberry Township, Pa./Central Catholic) collected two hits on the day to lead all Tomcats.
With the loss, Thiel evens to 1-1 on the season. The Tomcats will return to action tomorrow as they face Alvernia University again but at the Player Development Complex, Field #4, first pitch is set for 9 a.m.
