GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College men's volleyball team split a pair of Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) contests on Saturday at Beeghly Gymnasium.
Thiel dropped its first match 3-0 (25-21, 25-15, 25-18) to Wittenberg to open the day.
Leaders for the Tomcats in the three-set loss included
Chance Hoffman (Cochranton, Pa./Cochranton) with 12 kills,
Ryan Sumarsono (Victor, N.Y./Victor) with 12 digs,
Jacob Burkley (Waterford, Pa./Fort LeBoeuf) with four blocks, and
Stephen Borgen (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler Area) with 24 assists.
The Tomcats opened their second match of the day with a decisive 25-17 first-set victory before dropping each of the next two sets (25-19, 26-24) to Penn State Altoona.
Thiel kept the match going with a 28-26 fourth-set victory and edged the Lions 15-12 in the fifth to take the match, 3-2. Hoffman collected a game-high 18 kills while Burkley added another six blocks in the five-set win.
With the split, Thiel moves to 13-10 overall and 8-2 to the AMCC.
The Tomcats are back in action on Wednesday as they host D'Youville College in an AMCC clash at Beeghly Gymnasium. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
