GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College women's lacrosse team opened the 2019 season Saturday with a 10-9 non-conference win over the Marietta Pioneers at the Rissell-Schreyer Dome.
After trading a pair of goals early in the game, the Pioneers went on a 4-goal run to hold a 6-2 lead with 8:15 remaining before halftime. Thiel went on to score four of the next five goals, three by
Mackenzie Quinn (Carnegie, Pa./Chartiers Valley) and one by
Erica Auberzinski (Odenton, Md./Arundel), to cut Marietta's lead down to 7-6 at halftime.
The Tomcats outscored the Pioneers 4-2 in the second half to pick up the season-opening non-conference win.
Lexi Callander (Knox, Pa./Keystone) netted the game-winning goal on a pass from
Paige Scherer (Cranberry, Pa./Seneca Valley) with 3:28 remaining in regulation.
Quinn led Thiel with four goals while freshman
Maddy Wightman (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler) scored two goals. Auberzinski scored a goal and led Thiel with six ground balls, six caused turnovers and four draw controls.
Shelby Millheim led Marietta with three goals.
Emily Ramous (Bridgeville, Pa./Chartiers Valley) made three saves for Thiel in the win. Maddie Leers made nine saves for the Pioneers.
Thiel (1-0) will host the Allegheny Gators Wednesday at the Rissell-Schreyer Dome. The non-conference game will begin at 6 p.m.
