GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College men's volleyball team swept Medaille College (3-0) in their home opener and first Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) contest of the season.
The Tomcats and Mavericks traded the lead in a back and forth in the first before Thiel eventually clinched the set with a
Jacob DeRue (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) kill and an attacking error from Medaille to seal it. Thiel took the set 28-26.
In set number two, Thiel started fast with a 7-1 run to open the set before Medaille rallied back and eventually led 21-18 late in the set. Thiel recovered taking seven of the next nine points to take the set 25-23.
Thiel edged the Mavericks 25-21 in the third to take the match in straight sets (3-0).
Offensively, Thiel was led by DeRue and
Chance Hoffman (Cochranton, Pa./Cochranton) as the pair each collected 10 kills on the night.
Mitch Patterson (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) added eight kills.
Stephen Borgen (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler Area) racked up 33 assists in the three set win, while
Colton Greenlee (Cochranton, Pa./Cochranton) picked up five blocks.
The Tomcats are off this weekend before returning to action on Wednesday, February 20 as they take on AMCC opponent D'Youville College in Buffalo, N.Y., first serve is set for 7 p.m.
