GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel Tomcats earned a 3-2 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) win over the Bethany Bison Tuesday night at Beeghly Gymnasium.
Thiel won the first set 25-18 before falling 25-21 in the second set. Thiel and Bethany split the third and fourth sets. The Tomcats won the third set 25-22 before falling 26-24 in the fourth game.
Leading 11-9 in the fifth set,
Natalie Zucco (Cleveland, Ohio/North Royalton) gave the Tomcats a three-point lead with a kill off a
Courtney Grubbs (Freeport, Pa./Freeport) pass. Grubbs went on to secure the last three points for the Tomcats with a pair of service aces and another serve that ended with a Bethany error.
The win was Thiel's first over Bethany since Nov. 2, 2012 when the Tomcats defeated the Bison 3-1 in a PAC Championship Tournament semifinal contest. Thiel's last regular season win over Bethany was on Oct. 15, 2011.
Rebecca Dougherty (New Bethlehem, Pa./Redbank) led the Tomcats with 11 kills while
Jordyn Liedike (Anchorage, Alaska/Grace Christian) recorded 10 kills.
Raquel McDonald (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Grimes) came up with nine kills to go along with five blocks.
Grubbs dished out 37 assists and tallied 15 digs.
Taylor Williams (Tuscarawas, Ohio/Indian Valley) and Zucco recorded 16 and 12 digs, respectively.
Lindsey Llewellyn led Bethany with 15 kills. Katie Sparks contributed 22 digs and 14 kills while Jenna Scott notched 53 assists.
Thiel improved to 2-3 in the PAC with the win while the Bison fell to 3-2.
The Tomcats will play a pair PAC home games against the Washington & Jefferson Presidents and Saint Vincent Bearcats on Saturday. Thiel will take on W&J at noon before facing Saint Vincent at 4 p.m.
