GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College women's volleyball team defeated the Grove City Wolverines in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) match at Beeghly Gymnasium Tuesday night, 3-2.
The Tomcats won the first two sets (26-24, 25-22) but fell in the next two sets (25-17, 25-18).
In the fifth set, the Tomcats built up a 5-1 lead on kills by
Rebecca Dougherty (New Bethlehem, Pa./Redbank),
Raquel McDonald (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Grimes) and
Kylee Eaton (Parker, Pa./AC Valley). Dougherty also recorded an ace in the sequence. Grove City stormed back to hold a 14-12 lead, but Thiel got the serve back on a Grove City error.
Courtney Grubbs (Freeport, Pa./Freeport) did the rest for the Tomcats. The sophomore setter served up a pair of aces to give her team a 15-14 lead, and Thiel picked up the decisive point on a Grove City error.
Grubbs tallied a match-best 45 assists to go along with the two key aces at the end of the fifth set. Dougherty led the Tomcats with 12 kills while McDonald recorded 10 kills and five blocks.
Cassandra Bown (Broadalbin, N.Y./Broadalbin-Perth) notched 11 kills for the Tomcats.
Abby Triskett (Orwell, Ohio/Grand Valley) and
Hailley Kendall (Saint Paris, Ohio/Graham) came up with 26 and 25 kills, respectively.
Mya Storll (Linesville, Pa./Conneaut Area) contributed 22 digs.
Cassidy Kohmann handed out 42 assists for Grove City. Elisabeth Seems recorded 32 digs and 13 kills while Faith Keating contributed 25 digs and 11 kills.
With the win, the Tomcats improved to 7-4 in PAC play on the season. The win also forced a tie in the season series with the Wolverines, who earned a 3-0 win at home over the Tomcats on Sept. 26.
Thiel has won seven of its last nine games. The Tomcats will face the Bethany Bison on the road Thursday. The PAC match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
