GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College women's volleyball team won both games of a doubleheader at Beeghly Gymnasium on Tuesday night.
Thiel faced off against nonconference foe La Roche College in match number one. The Tomcats and Redhawks went the distance needing a fifth set to determine the match. Thiel would prevail 3-2, despite dropping the opening set.
Thiel's offense was a well-balanced attack as five Tomcats collected nine or more kills in five-set win.
Jessica Kelley (Freeport, Pa./Freeport) and
Rebecca Dougherty (New Bethlehem, Pa./Redbank) both had a team-high 11 kills apiece.
Macy Jordan (York, Pa./York Suburban) reached double-digits kills as well, and
Shelby Friedel (Columbia Station, Ohio/Columbia) and
Kasey Kohler (New Springfield, Ohio/Springfield Local) each added nine kills on the night. Freshman setter
Courtney Grubbs (Freeport, Pa./Freeport) set up the Tomcat offense all night as she dished out a match-high and career-high 53 assists against La Roche.
Thiel then went on to face Allegheny College in the second half of the Tuesday night's doubleheader. The Tomcats made quick work of the Gators as they swept the match in three to pick up their second win of the night.
Kelley once again added double-digit kills as she collected a match-high 11 kills against the Gators.
Peyton Allen (Mineral Ridge, Ohio/Mineral Ridge) recorded a match-high 28 digs in the three set victory.
Brie Bialota (Pittsburgh, Pa. /Plum) added a match-high four aces against Allegheny.
With tonight's pair of nonconference wins, Thiel sits at 7-7 overall and 2-2 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) before Saturday's PAC tri-match in Washington, Pa.
Thiel will face Washington and Jefferson College and Westminster College on Saturday. The Tomcats face the Titans of Westminster at 1:00 p.m. before facing the hosting Presidents of W&J at 3:00 p.m.
