BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Thiel College softball team swept a pair of Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) games from the Geneva Golden Tornadoes at Conrady Field Thursday afternoon. Thiel won the first game 11-2 in six innings before winning the second game 11-1 in five innings.
Leah Woytek (Hillsville, Pa./Mohawk) staked the Tomcat to an early first-inning lead in the first game when she stole third base and scored on a throwing error. Thiel plated three runs in the second, one on a groundout by
Quinn Ursprung (Bel Air, Md./C Milton Wright) and another on a double to right field by
Madison Fullmer (Elyria, Ohio/Elyria).
Starting pitcher
Jessica Kelley (Freeport, Pa./Freeport) helped her own cause with an RBI-single in the third, and she later scored on a wild pitch. Urpsrung also drove in a run in the third on a single to center field.
Vanessa Falce (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) drove in Thiel's eighth run of the game in the fourth on a double to center field, and
Chase Gifford (Buffalo, N.Y./City Honors School) made it 9-0 on a groundout.
Geneva picked up a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth, but the Tomcats came back with two more runs in the sixth to end the game.
Kelley led the Tomcats at the plate in Game 1 with a 3-for-4 performance that included two RBIs and two runs scored. Falce also went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.
Kelley earned the win in the first game. She allowed two runs on nine hits with three strikeouts.
Falce put the Tomcats up 1-0 in the first inning of Game 2 when she brought home Woytek on a single to center field.
The Tomcats went on to score six runs in the second inning, which was keyed by a 2-RBI double to left field by
A.J. Corradi (Youngstown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch).
Falce put the game away in the fifth when she smashed her first career grand slam.
Falce went 4-for-4 in Game 2 with six RBIs and two runs scored. She hit a grand slam and a double.
Shannon Baker (Corry, Pa./Corry) tossed a three-hitter in the second game to pick up her seventh win of the season. She allowed just one run and struck out three batters.
The Tomcats will conclude the 2018 season Saturday when they face the Thomas More Saints on the road. The first game of the PAC twinbill is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
