GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College softball team earned a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader sweep Saturday over the Chatham Cougars at Tomcat Park. Thiel won the first game 8-5 before picking up a 6-4 win in the second game.
Chatham scored the first run of the series in the third inning, but the Tomcats came back with three runs in the bottom of the inning.
Jessica Kelley (Freeport, Pa./Freeport) drove in one of those run on a single to right field.
Chatham tied up the game 3-3 in the top of the fourth, but
Alexa Fike (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional) put Thiel back on top in the bottom of the inning when she singled up the middle allowing
Quinn Ursprung (Bel Air, Md./C Milton Wright) to score.
The Cougars forced another tie in the top of the fifth, but the Tomcats went ahead for good in the bottom of the frame with a 3-run effort. Ursprung drove in a pair of those runs on a single to left field while
Leah Woytek (Hillsville, Pa./Mohawk) drove in one run on a double.
Kelley gave the Tomcats an extra insurance run in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI-double to left field.
Kelley went 3-for-4 in the first game with two RBIs and two runs scored. Ursprung recorded two hits, including a triple, with two runs scored and two RBIs.
Shannon Baker (Corry, Pa./Corry) earned the win. She allowed five runs on 11 hits with four strikeouts.
In the second game, Chatham opened up a 2-0 lead in the first inning. However, Thiel responded with four runs in its first at-bat.
Vanessa Falce (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) drove in the Tomcats' first run of the game on a single to left field.
Bailey Hoover (Smock, Pa./Uniontown) drove in Falce on a single to left, and Kelley pushed two runs across the plate on a triple to center field.
Chatham eked out a run in the top of the fourth, but Thiel got that run back in the bottom of the inning when Fike singled up the middle, allowing Ursprung to score.
Urpsrung went on to drive in Thiel's sixth and final run of the game on a single to center field in the fifth inning.
Kelley earned the win in the second game. She allowed four runs on seven hits with one strikeout.
Baker, Corradi and Fike were honored during senior day following Saturday's games.
The Tomcats will take on the Saint Vincent Bearcats Sunday on the road. The first game of the PAC doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
