Blazers’ late rally the difference against Tomcats

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Thiel College baseball team was unable to get out of a bases loaded jam in the ninth, and the Elms College Blazers pushed a run across to earn the walk-off 6-5 win Wednesday.

The Tomcats jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the fourth when Spencer Rinaldi (Springfield, Ohio/Northwestern) doubled to right field to put Thiel on the board. Filippo Costanzo (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) then singled up the middle to score two more runs in the inning.

Elms answered in the bottom of the inning when Thomas Slane singled up the middle to score a run before Josh Berthiaume flew out to left field to push across another run to make it 3-2.

In the fifth, Thiel scored on an error and Rinaldi collected another RBI when he scored Jake Marino (Pittsfield, Pa./Youngsville) on a single to right field.

Tomcat starter Griffin Curry (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell) threw six innings and retired five batters on strikes, only allowing two runs. Thiel went to the bullpen in the seventh and the Blazers plated two runs to close the lead to one run. Thiel led 5-4 after seven. Thiel went scoreless in the eighth and allowed Elms to tie the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the inning when Josh Pasini doubled to center field.

After another scoreless inning for the Tomcats in the ninth, Elms loaded the bases with one out before a wild pitch led to the game-winning run for the Blazers.

With the loss Thiel fell to 1-4 on the season. The Tomcats will be back in action Thursday when they face Heidelberg University at the Player Development Complex Field #2. The first pitch is set for 9 a.m.
