FORT MYERS, Fla. – Thiel College baseball's sophomore catcher
Andrew Giesey (Penn, Pa./Penn Trafford)'s three-run blast in the first was not enough for the Tomcats to keep up with the Student Princes as they fell by a final score of 5-21 to Heidelberg University Thursday afternoon.
After allowing an opening four runs in the first the Tomcats quickly answered in the bottom of the inning as Giesey homered to pull with one. Heidelberg added a run in the third as to make it 5-3. Thiel answered in the fourth as
Jake Marino (Pittsfield, Pa./Youngsville) singled to center field to score
Zach Hudecek (Gibsonia, Pa./Deer Lakes).
The fifth decided the game as the Student Princes unloaded 11 runs on the Tomcats in the inning to take control of the game 16-4. Heidelberg added five more runs in the final innings. The Tomcat offense was only able to add one more run as
Anthony Sebastian (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk) singled to center field to score
Griffin Curry (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell) to make it 21-5.
Despite out hitting the Student Princes 18-15, the Tomcats five errors on the day proved to be the difference. Marino,
Filippo Costanzo (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick), and
Daniel Patrice (Munich, Germany/EST) each collected two hits apiece on the day.
The baseball team will be back in action tomorrow as they have two nine-inning games to continue play in the Gene Cusic Classic. The Tomcats will face St. John's University at 9:00 a.m. and then will face Rivier College immediately following, both games will be played at Terry Park Field #2.
