GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College baseball team earned a 6-5 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) victory over Grove City College on Monday.
The Tomcats jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the second as
Joe Mott (Kinsman, Ohio/Badger) singled to score
Christian Aldrich (Cranberry Township, Pa./Central Catholic) before
Zach Hudecek (Gibsonia, Pa./Deer Lakes) doubled to score Mott and
Alex Lam (Springboro, Ohio/Springboro).
Thiel continued to pour in the offense as
Griffin Curry (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell) doubled to score two more runs in the fourth put the Tomcats up 5-0. The Wolverines scored two runs in the fifth to pull within three.
A scoreless sixth led to the Wolverines taking advantage in the seventh as they would plate three runs in the inning to tie the game at 5-5 after seven.
Thiel would strike in the eighth as Mott walked to start the inning and advanced to second on a groundout as
Filippo Costanzo (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) stepped to the plate with two outs. Costanzo would reach first on a muffed throw from the pitcher that would also score Mott to give the Tomcats a 6-5 lead.
Freshman pitcher
Anthony Rago (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) entered in the eighth and shut down the Wolverines offense for a six-out victory. Rago earned his first collegiate win on the day.
With the win, The Tomcats improve to 5-10 overall and 1-1 in the PAC. Thiel will be back in action on Thursday as they travel to Pitt-Greensburg for a non-conference game, first pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
