ALLIANCE, Ohio – The Thiel College baseball team lost a non-conference game to the University of Mount Union Wednesday afternoon on the road, 4-2.
The Tomcats jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first when
Zach Hudecek (Gibsonia, Pa./Deer Lakes) walked with the bases loaded to drive across
Filippo Costanzo (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) for the first run of the game. Later in the inning,
Jake Marino (Pittsfield, Pa./Youngsville) reached first base on an error, which allowed
Nick Grice (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) to score to give the Tomcats a 2-0 edge.
The Purple Raiders answered in the fifth when Charlie Lewis singled through the left side to plate Mount Union's first run of the day, Thiel led 2-1 after three.
After a scoreless fourth inning, Mount Union's Christian Stanziano singled up the middle to tie the game at 2-2. Niklas Kuriger singled down the right field line to give the Purple Raiders their first lead of the day, 3-2.
After another scoreless inning for the Tomcats in the sixth the Purple Raiders added an insurance run when Billy Goodall scored a runner on a sacrifice-fly to make it 4-2.
The Tomcats were unable to extend the game as they went down in order in the ninth.
Five Tomcat pitchers were used in the nine-inning game.
Sante Carducci (Toronto, Ohio/Toronto) (1-1) absorbed the loss.
The Tomcats will be back in action on Saturday when they host to Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) opponent Chatham University at Tomcat Park. The first game of the doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
