Tomcats lose pair of games to Lions

GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College softball team lost a pair of non-conference games Sunday at Tomcat Park to the Penn State Behrend Lions. Thiel lost the first game of the doubleheader 7-0 before falling 10-4 in the second game.
 
In the first game, the Lions took a 2-0 lead in the third inning on a 2-RBI double by Alexa Bupp. It remained a 2-0 game until the Lions broke open the game with a 4-run effort in the sixth inning.
 
Bailey Hoover (Smock, Pa./Uniontown), Allyssa Kidwell (Fort Mohave, Ariz./Mohave Accelerated) and Alexa Fike (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional) each recorded a hit for the Tomcats.
 
Shannon Baker (Corry, Pa./Corry) took the loss. She allowed seven runs on five hits with four strikeouts.
 
Scoreless through two innings, Penn State Behrend plated four runs in the top of the third inning of the second game. The Tomcats plated one run in the bottom of the inning to cut into the lead.
 
The Lions went on to score two runs in the fourth and two more runs in the fifth. The Tomcats bounced back with three runs in the bottom of the fifth behind doubles by A.J. Corradi (Youngstown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) and Jessica Kelley (Freeport, Pa./Freeport), as well as a single by Fike.
 
Penn State Behrend went on to score two more runs over the final two innings and kept Thiel off the scoreboard the rest of the way to earn the non-conference win.
 
Thiel recorded 12 hits in the loss led by Leah Woytek (Hillsville, Pa./Mohawk), Kidwell, Corradi and Fike, who each recorded two hits.
 
The Tomcats will take on the La Roche Redhawks Monday at Tomcat Park. The first game of the non-conference doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
