Quinn, Farrell break program records in 26-24 win over Chatham

GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College women's lacrosse team won its Ohio River Lacrosse Conference (ORLC) opener Wednesday over the Chatham Cougars at the Rissell-Schreyer Dome, 26-24.

It was a record-breaking game for sophomore midfielder Mackenzie Quinn (Carnegie, Pa./Chartiers Valley) and senior goalkeeper Kyra Farrell (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oakland Catholic).

Quinn scored 13 goals and recorded 14 points, both of which set new program single-game standards. Quinn's 13 goals topped the previous mark of eight, which was set by Cassy Mahdi in a 15-14 win over Saint Vincent on March 12, 2013. Quinn's 14 points topped the past record of 10, owned by Mahdi and Emily Harrigan, who both notched 10 points in a 22-3 win over Waynesburg on May 16, 2014.

Thiel owned a 14-9 halftime lead, but Chatham battled back and tied up the score twice in the second half. A five-goal streak by the Tomcats late in regulation sealed the win. Quinn scored three goals during the streak while Paige Scherer (Cranberry, Pa./Seneca Valley) scored a pair of goals.

Scherer finished the game with nine goals. Kristyn Kinner (Alba, Pa./Troy) and Alyssa Hilliard (Baltimore, Ohio/Liberty Union) also chipped in with two points apiece.

Fittingly, it was Quinn who scored what would count as the eventual game-winning goal with 7:33 remaining in regulation. She added an insurance goal with 1:32 left on the game clock.

Farrell also did her part in the win with a new program single-game best 24 saves, which topped the previous record of 19. Maria Cefola made 13 saves for the Cougars.

Sydney Collins paced the Cougars with eight points (7G, 1A) while Kendra McBroom tallied seven points (6G, 1A).

The Tomcats will return to action Sunday when they host the Transylvania Pioneers at the Rissell-Schreyer Dome. The ORLC game is scheduled to begin at noon.
