MONACA, Pa. – The Thiel College softball team earned a pair of non-conference wins Saturday on the road over the Penn State Beaver Lady Lions. Thiel won the first game of the doubleheader 5-4 before winning 14-0 in five innings in the second game.
The Lady Lions held a 2-0 lead after three innings in the first game, but the Tomcats took their first lead in the game after plating three runs in the top of the fourth. Starting pitcher
Jessica Kelley (Freeport, Pa./Freeport) got the Tomcats going with a 2-RBI single, and she later scored on a
Madison Fullmer (Elyria, Ohio/Elyria) single.
Thiel picked up two more runs in the sixth inning, one on another RBI-single by Kelley and another when
Alexa Fike (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional) grounded out.
Penn State Beaver scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh to cut Thiel's lead down to 5-4, but Kelley and the Tomcat defense ended the threat with a game-ending double play.
Kelley earned the win. She allowed one earned run on six hits with a strikeout. She also led the Tomcats at the dish with a 2-hit, 3-RBI effort.
Miranda Reesman (Vandergrift, Pa./Leechburg) went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles while
Leah Woytek (Hillsville, Pa./Mohawk) and Fullmer also collected two hits apiece.
Thiel exploded for 14 runs on 17 hits in the second game.
Bailey Hoover (Smock, Pa./Uniontown) led Thiel at the plate in the second game with three hits, one of which was a double, and three RBIs. Woytek, Fike,
A.J. Corradi (Youngstown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) and
Vanessa Falce (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) also notched two hits apiece.
Shannon Baker (Corry, Pa./Corry) earned the win. She threw a 2-hitter in five innings of work without allowing a run. Baker struck out six batters and issued three walks.
The Tomcats will return to action Monday when they play a home non-conference doubleheader against the Hiram Terriers at Tomcat Park. The first game will begin at 3:30 p.m. with the second game scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.
