Tomcats split with #18 Yellow Jackets

BEREA, Ohio – The Thiel College baseball team split a nonconference doubleheader on Sunday to eighteenth-ranked Baldwin Wallace University. The Yellow Jackets took game one 9-3 before the Tomcats grabbed game two 5-2.
 
In game one, Christian Aldrich (Cranberry Township, Pa./Central Catholic) continued to swing a hot bat as he doubled to score Filippo Costanzo (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) to give the Tomcats an early 1-0 advantage in the first. Baldwin Wallace evened the game at 1-1 as Alex Marcum doubled down the line to score one.
 
Zach Hudecek (Gibsonia, Pa./Deer Lakes) hit his second homerun of the weekend (third of the year) as he drove a solo shot to right field to make it 2-1 Tomcats. Aldrich struck again in the third as his sacrifice-fly scored Costanzo making 3-1 in favor of Thiel.
 
The Yellow Jackets outpaced the Tomcats after the third collecting six runs to close out the game. Baldwin Wallace took game one 9-3. Aldrich and Costanzo both finished game one with two hits.
 
Game two saw the Tomcats jump out to an early lead as Andrew Giesey (Penn, Pa./Penn Trafford) singled to right to plate two runs and Alex Lam (Springboro, Ohio/Springboro)'s fielder's choice scored another run making it 3-0 Thiel in the first. Baldwin Wallace would score one run on a Tomcat throwing error and added another run in the second to pull within one, 3-2.

Aldrich recorded another double to make it 4-2 in the third before Griffin Curry (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell) drove in a Tomcat run on a double down the line for an insurance run in the seventh. Thiel took game two 5-2.
 
Sante Carducci (Toronto, Ohio/Toronto) (1-0) earned his first win of the year as he allowed just two earned runs in five innings of work. Carducci fanned five and allowed just one walk. Spencer Rinaldi (Springfield, Ohio/Northwestern) collected a six-out save for his third of the year to secure the win.
 
In four games this weekend, Aldrich went 7-for-14 (.538) at the plate and drove in a team-high eight RBI's and collected a total of 17 bases. Tomcat catcher Giesey went 6-for-14 (.429) on the week.
 
The Tomcats will be back in action on Wednesday as they travel to Pitt-Bradford, first pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
