LATROBE, Pa. – The Thiel College baseball team split a nonconference doubleheader against Mt. Aloysius College on Saturday as they dropped game one 13-3 and took game two 10-7.
Game one saw the Tomcats take an early 1-0 lead as
Christian Aldrich (Cranberry Township, Pa./Central Catholic) doubled to left field to score
Filippo Costanzo (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) in the first. The Mounties answered in the bottom of the inning as Matt McCourt homered to left field to score three and take a 3-1 advantage after one.
Mt. Aloysius added two more runs in the third to make it 5-1 before Thiel scored on a sacrifice fly by
Spencer Rinaldi (Springfield, Ohio/Northwestern) to make it 5-3 after another runner scored on a throwing error.
Thiel would not score another run after the fourth as Mt. Aloysius continued to pour in the offense scoring four runs in the fourth and four more runs in the sixth to make it a 13-3 final in favor of the Mounties.
In game two, Thiel fell behind early as McCourt continued to find success at the plate as he doubled to left field to score one to make it 1-0 after one. A four run second put the Tomcats in the lead as
Alex Lam (Springboro, Ohio/Springboro) hit a sacrifice fly to score Aldrich and
Zach Hudecek (Gibsonia, Pa./Deer Lakes) blasted his second homer of the year to plate three to make it 4-1.
After a two run second inning for the Mounties, Aldrich answered with a home run to center field in the third and homered again in the fifth for his second and third home runs of the year. Thiel went ahead 9-4 after five.
The Mounties would not go down quietly as they scored three to cut the led to two, 9-7. Thiel would go on to add another run and take the second game 10-7. Aldrich finished the game with three hits, three runs, and four RBI's.
Griffin Curry (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell) (1-0) collected his first win of the year as he allowed four earned runs and retired five on strikes.
With the split, The Tomcats sit at 3-8 on the year and will travel to Berea, Ohio to face Baldwin Wallace University tomorrow for a nonconference doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m.
