GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College men's volleyball team took a four set match 3-1 over non-conference opponent Hiram College Tuesday night at Beeghly Gymnasium.
The Tomcats took a hard-fought first set 25-22 over the Terries to take an early advantage.
Despite Hiram going on a five-point run to take an early 7-6 lead the Tomcats came back and cruised to a victory in the second set, 25-18, by taking eight of the last nine points.
The Terries extended the match as they grabbed set three 25-21 to avoid the sweep. However, the Tomcats would take the match in the fourth as they outscored the Terries, 25-21.
Leaders for the Tomcats included
Mitchell Patterson (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) and
Jacob DeRue (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) who collected 16 and 14 kills, respectively.
Stephen Borgen (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler Area) added a game-high 47 assists, while
Ryan Sumarsono (Victor, N.Y./Victor) had a game-high 14 digs.
With the win, the Tomcats improved to 9-10 overall and will face Continental Volleyball Conference (CVC) opponent Marymount University in Arlington, Va. on Friday. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m.
