GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College men's volleyball team dropped a Continental Volleyball Conference (CVC) match 3-0 to the Southern Virginia University Knights on Saturday at Beeghly Gymnasium.
In the first, Thiel hung around with Southern Virginia in the early going as they were down only three (10-7) before the Knights went on a 10-3 run to build their lead to 20-10 to take control of the set. Southern Virginia went on to win the set 25-17.
Looking to bounce back in the second set the Tomcats traded the lead with the Knights and were tied at 18 apiece late in the match. The back and forth second set continued as the score was once again tied at 24 all. Thiel was unable to complete the comeback as they dropped the next two points to drop the set 26-24.
In the third the Tomcats found themselves up 7-6 before another run by the Knights (9-1) found the Tomcats down 16-8. Southern Virginia closed out the set and the match winning nine of the next 16 points to down Thiel 25-15.
Leaders for the game included SVU's Nahuel Aguero with eight kills and nine digs, both game highs. For the Tomcats
Dan Zajac (Ambridge, Pa./Ambridge) collected a team-high seven kills and
Stephen Borgen (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler Area) dished out a game-high 25 assists on the day.
With the loss, Thiel falls to 4-4 overall and 0-2 in the CVC.
Next up for the Tomcats is a CVC match against the ninth-ranked Eagles of Juniata College (5-5, 1-0 CVC) on Wednesday at Beeghly Gymnasium, the match is set to begin at 7:00 p.m.
