GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College men's volleyball team swept Continental Volleyball Conference (CVC) opponent Cairn University 3-0 Friday night at Beeghly Gymnasium.
Thiel took the first two sets by the same mark (25-20) to take a commanding two sets to none lead over Cairn. The Tomcats went on to clinch the match on a 25-17 third set victory.
The Tomcats kept the Highlander offense in check only allowing one player to have double-digit kills and blocked five Highlander attacks.
On offense for Thiel,
Mitchell Patterson (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) collected a game-high 17 kills on the night and
Jacob DeRue (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) added six kills.
Stephen Borgen (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler Area) racked up 31 assists and
Ryan Sumarsono (Victor, N.Y./Victor) added 17 digs in the three-set Thiel victory.
With the sweep, Thiel improves to 6-9 overall and 2-5 in the CVC.
The Tomcats will be back in action tomorrow at 2:00 PM to take on CVC opponent Neumann University at Beeghly Gymnasium. After tomorrow's match the Tomcats will not return to Beeghly Gymnasium until March 13 for a nonconference matchup against Hiram College.
