GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College wrestling team split their home opener on Friday Night at Beeghly Gymnasium against Lycoming College and Penn State Behrend.
The Tomcats fell decidedly to Lycoming in their first match of the night 39-6. Senior
Dominic Farabaugh (Loretto, Pa./Penn Cambria) collected Thiel's only victory as he pinned Christian Wachter just before the end of the first period (1:49).
In match number two, The Tomcats dropped the first match before rattling off five straight wins to make it 28-4 in favor of Thiel.
Michel Duncan (Harrisburg, Pa./Harrisburg) and
Michael Doerflinger (Slippery Rock/Slippery Rock Area) each collected forfeit victories at 133 and 149 pounds, respectively.
At 149 pounds, Freshman
Lukas McClain (Ridgeway, Pa./Ridgeway Area) pinned Cole Ruffo at the 3:37 mark.
Jason Miller (Clarksville, Pa./Jefferson Morgan) and
Austin Bonacci (West Mifflin, Pa./West Mifflin) each collected technical falls in their matches against the Lions. Miller at 157 pounds outscored Behrend's Jake Ognibene 18-2, well Bonnaci won decisively 22-8 over Behrend's Tyler Speraw.
The Lions rallied back taking the next two matches to close the gap to 28-14 before the Tomcats shut the door with two victories at 197 and 285 pounds.
Farabaugh bumped up to 197 pounds to make quick work of Behrend's Sam Tubbs as he earned a pinned in just 11 seconds to extend the Tomcat lead to 34-14.
Gage Gladysz (Greenville, Pa./Greenville) also moved up a weight-class as he closed out the night with an 18-3 technical fall over Jimmy Turici. Thiel won 39-14.
The Tomcats will not be back in action until 2019 as they travel to Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio for the CWR Throwdown on Wednesday, January 9
th beginning at 6:00 p.m.
