LATROBE, Pa. –
Nick Barca (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) ran for 80 yards and scored a pair of touchdowns Saturday in a 35-13 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) loss to the Saint Vincent Bearcats at Chuck Noll Field.
Barca led the Tomcats on the opening drive of the game. He carried seven times on the 13-play, 73-yard drive, which consumed nearly seven minutes of the first quarter and ended when he scored on a one-yard run.
Saint Vincent evened the score late in the first quarter when Ariel Martinez scored on a 10-yard run. Martinez gave the Bearcats their first lead late in the second quarter when he caught a 37-yard touchdown pass from Zavion Thompson to cap off an 84-yard drive that took seven plays.
Thompson connected with Shaquille Edmond on another 37-yard touchdown pass on the first drive of the second half to extend Saint Vincent's lead to 21-7.
After the game was suspended for 2.5 hours due to lightning, Barca got the Tomcats back within striking distance when he scored on a 24-yard run with 9:09 remaining in the third quarter.
However, Martinez scored his third touchdown of the game, this one on a 21-yard pass from Thompson early in the fourth quarter. Saint Vincent also scored a touchdown on a 12-yard blocked punt return later in the fourth quarter.
Thompson completed 17-of-34 passes for 281 yards. He threw three touchdown passes and two interceptions. Mike Stasko led the Bearcats with 74 yards on the ground on 12 carries. Martinez caught seven passes, two of which were touchdowns, for 116 yards.
Eligah Flynn (Cleveland, Ohio/Cleveland Central Catholic) and
Matt Crawford (Greenville, Pa./Greenville) led Thiel with seven tackles apiece. Flynn also intercepted a pass, which he returned 48 yards.
Malcolm Barclay (College Park, Md./Parkdale) also picked off a pass while
Davion Oliver (Tampa, Fla./Middleton) made five tackles, one of which was a sack.
Thiel will face the Westminster Titans Saturday on the road. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.
