GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College women's volleyball team fell 3-1 to Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) opponent Washington & Jefferson College Wednesday night at Beeghly Gymnasium.
Each of the first three sets were decided by two points as the Presidents jumped out to a 1-0 advantage after earning a hard-fought first set victory, 30-28.
The Tomcats rebounded in the second set with a 27-25 win. The third match went back-and-forth before the Presidents picked up a 25-23 victory.
In the match-deciding fourth set, Thiel fell behind early and never regained the lead as W&J took the set 25-17 to win the match 3-1.
Both
Jessica Kelley (Freeport, Pa./Freeport) and
Kasey Kohler (New Springfield, Ohio/Springfield Local) collected match-highs in kills with 16 each.
Courtney Grubbs (Freeport, Pa./Freeport) added 46 assists to go along with 16 digs in the four-set loss.
Defensively,
Shelby Friedel (Columbia Station, Ohio/Columbia) blocked a match-high five attacks and
Peyton Allen (Mineral Ridge, Ohio/Mineral Ridge) recorded 36 digs.
Thiel fell to 11-14 overall and 4-6 in the PAC with the loss.
The Tomcats are back in action Saturday when they travel to Latrobe, Pa. to face PAC opponent Saint Vincent College. The first serve is set for noon. The Tomcats swept the Bearcats in their first meeting this year on Sept. 15 at Beeghly Gymnasium.
