Tomcats drop two in PAC Tri-Match

GREENVILLE, Pa.  – The Thiel College women's volleyball team dropped two Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) matches on Saturday against both Westminster College and Bethany College.

The Tomcats struggled on the day as they were swept in both matches falling 3-0 to both the Titans and Bison.

Thiel opened with Westminster as the Titans made quick work of the Tomcats as they took the first set 25-8. The Tomcats battled in the second set but fell 25-17 as the Titans took a 2-0 advantage. Westminster closed the match with a 25-11 set victory.

Thiel faced Bethany in their second match of the day and fell to the Bison by a three set to none final. The Tomcats allowed a five-point run by the Bison late in the first set to give up the lead and eventually the set as Bethany took the set 1-0 (25-22). After making a three-point run to tie the game in the second at 16-16 the Tomcats were unable to complete the comeback and fell 25-21. In the deciding set Bethany went on a 10 point run to put the set and game out of reach, as the Tomcats fell 25-16.

Offensively, Freshman Taylor Williams (Tuscarawas, Ohio/Indian Valley) led the Tomcat offense in kills on the day with 11 and Junior Hannah Rossman (Fairview, Pa./Fairview) added 25 assets in two matches. Defensively, Junior Shelby Friedel (Columbia Station, Ohio/Columbia) collected 4 blocks and Freshman Olivia Scott (Willoughby, Ohio/Willoughby South) recorded a team-high 26 digs on the day.

With the two losses, Thiel falls to 7-6 overall and 1-2 in the PAC.

The Tomcats will be back in action on Monday Sept. 18 in a non-conference match at Beeghly Gymnasium starting at 7:00 p.m.
