WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Thiel College softball team swept the Washington & Jefferson Presidents in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play on the road Wednesday. Thiel won the first game 6-1 before earning a 9-0 win in the second game in five innings.
The Presidents took an early 1-0 lead in the first game, but the Tomcats responded with six unanswered runs.
Leah Woytek (Hillsville, Pa. /Mohawk) tied up the game 1-1 in the third inning when she doubled into left center field, allowing
Madison Fullmer (Elyria, Ohio/Elyria) to score.
Thiel plated four runs in the fourth inning.
Jessica Kelley (Sarver, Pa./Freeport) had the key hit in the inning, a 2-RBI double to right center that scored
Miranda Reesman (Vandergrift, Pa./Leechburg) and
Mary Kate Dougherty (Depew, N.Y/Mt. St. Mary Academy).
Alana Callahan (Austintown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) and
A.J. Corradi (Youngstown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) also chipped in with one RBI apiece in the fourth.
Kelley tacked on her third RBI of the contest in the seventh on a single to center field, which scored
Vanessa Falce (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport).
Kelley and Fullmer each notched a pair of hits for the Tomcats in the first game. Kelley also tallied three RBIs and scored a run.
After two scoreless innings in the second game, Thiel struck for four runs in the third inning, three runs in the fourth and two runs in the fifth.
Reesman hit a 3-run homer in the third inning. It was her third home run of the season. Reesman also doubled, drove in three runs and scored a run.
Woytek tallied two hits and two RBIs. Falce and Fullmer also recorded two hits apiece.
Kelley earned both wins to improve to 10-10 on the season. She allowed one earned run on three hits in the first game and tossed a three-hit shutout in the second game. She struck out three batters in 12 innings of work.
The Tomcats will play a key doubleheader against the Geneva Golden Tornadoes Friday. The first game of the PAC doubleheader will begin at 3:30 p.m. at Tomcat Park.
