GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel Tomcats swept the Geneva Golden Tornadoes Friday to earn a berth in next week's PAC Championship Tournament. Thiel defeated Geneva 9-7 in the first game and 10-3 in the second game.
Caitlyn Carney (Lake Milton, Ohio/Jackson Milton) set the tone for the day with a two-run bomb over the left field fence in the first inning of the first game.
Geneva eked out a run in the second inning, but the Tomcats plated three runs in the third to hold a 5-1 lead.
Miranda Reesman (Vandergrift, Pa./Leechburg) hit a run-scoring single in the third and later scored on a wild pitch.
The Golden Tornadoes came back with a six-run effort in the fifth to take a 7-5 lead. Reesman got one of those runs back in the bottom of the inning when she hit an RBI-double to center field.
The Tomcats went on to score three runs in the sixth to win the first game, 9-7.
Vanessa Falce (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) drove in the game-tying run on a single to right field, and Carney followed with a two-RBI single up the middle.
Falce went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and one RBI in the first game. Carney went 2-for-2 with a home run and four RBIs. Reesman went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored while
Alana Callahan (Austintown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) went 2-for-3 with one run scored.
The Golden Tornadoes scored three runs in the first inning of the second game, but they turned out to be the only runs they would get.
Thiel countered with four runs in the bottom of the first to take the lead.
A.J. Corradi (Youngstown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) hit an RBI-double down the left field line and Reesman drove in a run on a single to left center field.
Jessica Kelley (Sarver, Pa./Freeport) brought in two more runs with a double to center field.
The Tomcats went on to add three runs in the second, one in the fourth and two in the sixth to secure the do-or-die sweep.
Leah Woytek (Hillsville, Pa. /Mohawk), Corradi, Carney and Reesman each collected a pair of hits in the second game. Carney and Reesman each tallied three RBIs.
Kelley earned both wins Friday to improve to 12-10 on the season. She allowed five earned runs on nine hits in the first game. In the second game, she allowed three runs on five hits. Kelley struck out three batters in 14 innings of work.
The PAC Championship Tournament will take place at top-seeded Thomas More College on Friday, May 5 and Saturday, May 6.
