LATROBE, Pa. – The Thiel College baseball team lost a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) 9-inning game to Saint Vincent College at Bearcat Ballfield on Wednesday by a final score of 5-4.
Alex Lam (Springboro, Ohio/Springboro) started the game with a single to right field followed by a
Bryan Mitchell (Cleveland, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) walk. Lam advanced to third on a ground out by
Nick Grice (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) and later scored on a passed ball.
Daniel Patrice (Munich, Germany/EST) singled to left field to score Mitchell. The Tomcats led 2-0 after one.
In the third, Grice got on base with a single to left field before
Filippo Costanzo (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) smacked his second homerun of the year to left field. Thiel led 4-0 after three.
Starter
Kevin Forrester (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) cruised through the first three innings and only allowed two Bearcat hits before he ran into trouble in the fourth.
The Bearcats scored two runs in the fourth, the first off a balk on Forrester and the second off a Greg Martin double to left field to that drove in the second run of the game for Saint Vincent. Thiel still led 4-2 after four.
Saint Vincent took the lead in the fifth as the Bearcats had three runs on four hits to make it 5-4 after five.
The Tomcats only amassed two hits in the final four innings and never regained the lead.
Reliever Dylan Pietrantoni closed the door in the ninth to retire the Tomcats as he grabbed his third save of the season.
Forrester collected the loss and now sits at 4-4 on the year as Saint Vincent Starter Jimmy Malone picked up his fifth win of the year.
Thiel (19-14, 11-8 PAC) will return to action on Saturday when they take on Waynesburg University on the road. The PAC doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
