Titans edge Tomcats

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Thiel College softball team was edged by the Westminster Titans in a pair of Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) games Saturday. Westminster won the first game 2-0 before winning the second game 7-6 in eight innings.

In the first game, the Titans scored both of their runs in the third inning. One run scored on Checka Nardone's single. Nardone also scored later in the inning on an error.

Jessica Kelley (Sarver, Pa./Freeport) and Alana Callahan (Austintown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) each recorded a hit for the Tomcats in the first game. Nardone led Westminster with a pair of hits, one run scored and an RBI.

Jazmyn Rohrer threw a 2-hit shutout for the Titans with six strikeouts.

Thiel held a 5-3 lead in the second game, but Westminster forced a tie with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth.

After a scoreless seventh inning, Leah Woytek (Hillsville, Pa. /Mohawk) scored the go-ahead run for the Tomcats in the top of the eighth inning thanks to an error by the Titans.

However, a Thiel error in the bottom of the eighth proved costly as Westminster scored a pair of unearned runs to capture the sweep.

Alexa Fike (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional) led the Tomcats at the plate in the second game with a 3-for-4 performance that included a pair of RBIs. Woytek and Callahan also collected a pair of hits.

Rohrer also earned the win in the second game. She allowed one run on two hits in four innings of relief work.

Kelley pitched both games for the Tomcats. In the first game, she allowed one earned run on four hits. In the second game, she gave up three earned runs on eight hits with a pair of strikeouts.

The Tomcats will return to action Wednesday when they face the Washington & Jefferson Presidents on the road. The first game of the PAC doubleheader is set to begin at 3:30 p.m.
