GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Mount St. Joseph Lions edged the Thiel Tomcats in Ohio River Lacrosse Conference (ORLC) play Saturday at Alumni Stadium, 17-14.
The first half went back-and-forth until Kara Marshall scored with 33 seconds remaining before halftime to give the Lions a two-goal lead (10-8) at the break.
Mount St. Joseph went on open the second half with six straight goals to claim a 16-8 lead with 14:36 remaining in regulation. The Tomcats closed out the game with five consecutive goals over the final 7:39 but they ran out of time in their comeback attempt.
Mackenzie Quinn (Carnegie, Pa./Chartiers Valley) and
Paige Scherer (Cranberry, Pa./Seneca Valley) led the Tomcats with four goals apiece while
Jennifer Rickens (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) scored three goals.
Myesha Fisher (Cleveland, Ohio/John Adams),
Melody Zuniga (Fort Meade, Md./Meade) and
Bradleigh Williams (Lusby, Md./Patuxent) also chipped in with a goal apiece.
Scherer led the Tomcats with seven ground balls and also contributed four caused turnovers and four draw controls. Zuniga picked up six ground balls and caused four turnovers.
Marshall led the Lions with five goals.
Kyra Farrell (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oakland Catholic) made 15 saves for the Tomcats while Molly Shea turned aside seven shots for the Lions.
Thiel will take on Transylvania on the road Saturday. The ORLC game is set to begin at noon.
