No fooling, Tomcats come back to beat Presidents

Reib, O’Connor shine late

GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel Tomcats erased a 4-goal halftime deficit Saturday to earn a 15-14 Ohio River Lacrosse Conference (ORLC) win over the Washington & Jefferson Presidents at the Rissell-Schreyer Dome.

Trailing 9-5 at halftime, the Tomcats opened the third quarter with four straight goals to tie up the game. Four different Tomcats scored over the stretch, including Kyle Reib (Erie, Pa./McDowell), Edward Kargbo (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams), John Smiley (Lincoln University, Pa./Avon Grove) and Mike Bryant (Cleveland, Ohio/Cleveland Heights).

From there the game went back-and-forth with neither team holding more than a 2-goal lead.

The Presidents tied up the game 14-14 with less than three minutes left in the fourth quarter when Bryan Whipkey scored on a pass from Kyle Heinig, but Reib went on to score what turned out to be the game-winner from the left wing with 1:48 remaining after receiving a lead pass from Jared Saffer (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills).

The Presidents sought the game-tying goal late, but freshman goaltender Cole O'Connor (Midlothian, Va./James River) made a key save on Heinig with 32 seconds remaining to preserve the win for the Tomcats.

Reib led the Tomcats with three goals, including the game-winner. Brennen O'Shea (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) notched six points (2G, 4A).

Devon Curran led the Presidents with six points (4G, 2A) while Ben Ward tallied five points (3G, 2A).

O'Connor made nine saves for the Tomcats in a little under 35 minutes of work to earn his first collegiate win. Noah Cohen denied 19 shots for the Presidents.

The Tomcats will take on the Westminster Titans on the road on Wednesday, April 12. The ORLC game is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.
