READING, Pa. – The Thiel College men's volleyball team earned a 3-2 Continental Volleyball Conference (CVC) win Friday over the Alvernia Crusaders.
Thiel lost the first set 25-20 but won 25-16 in the second game. The Crusaders took the third set 25-15 before the Tomcats earned a narrow 26-24 victory in the fourth game. Thiel opened up a 5-1 lead in the fifth set and held on to win, 15-10.
Mitchell Patterson (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) led the Tomcats with 13 kills.
Regan Hess (Burlington, Wis./Wetosha Central) and
Jacob Burkley (Waterford, Pa./Fort LeBoeuf) contributed 10 and nine kills, respectively. Burkley and
Cody Patterson (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) also combined for five blocks. Patterson also chipped in with seven digs.
Zach Rombach (Severn, Md./Archbishop Spalding) tallied a double-double with 40 assists and 10 digs while
Thad Paunovich (Avonmore, Pa./Kiski Area) came up with 17 digs.
Ralph Lunati tallied 14 kills for the Crusaders. Spencer Matthews and Justin Gibbs both recorded double-doubles. Matthews notched 11 kills and 10 digs while Gibbs handed out 30 assists and came up with 11 digs.
The Tomcats will take on the Stevenson Mustangs on the road Saturday. The CVC match is set to begin at 2 p.m.
